Reinventing After Corporate: When Survival Mode No Longer Works

There are moments in life when reinvention feels like a choice. And then there are moments when reinvention becomes a requirement. For many professionals right now, especially Black women, we are living through the second kind. Recently I read that more than 600,000 Black women are currently unemployed. Six hundred thousand.


Behind that number are leaders, strategists, communicators, operators, and builders who spent years contributing value inside organizations. But we also need to name something honestly. Black women have always navigated structural barriers in the workplace. We often have to outperform expectations just to be considered qualified.We are asked to prove our value repeatedly in rooms where our presence is still questioned. So when industries restructure or priorities shift, the impact can land on us first.


But here is what I want to make clear. Your value did not disappear. The container changed.


I know that because I’ve lived through my own reinvention. At one point in my corporate career, I had to make a decision. My peace of mind…or my title. And I chose my peace.


Now let me be clear. I didn’t leave because I couldn’t perform. I left after building a $100 million business inside corporate America. And I made sure I left with the receipts. To this day, I still go back and look at the sales spreadsheets and reports from that time. Not out of ego. But as a reminder. A reminder of who I am.


Because when you step into reinvention, doubt gets loud. And if you don’t anchor yourself in evidence, you can start believing the wrong story about yourself. That’s why I keep a simple affirmation on my wall:


“Don’t forget who you are.”


Eventually I realized something important. You cannot trade alignment for achievement forever. Corporate structure gave me authority.It gave me validation.It gave me stability. But internally, something had shifted. So I left.


I stepped into consulting first. That season stretched me. It forced me to trust my own capabilities in ways corporate structure never required. Over time that path led me to producing television, building media platforms, and serving as Executive Director of the HBCU Honors Foundation.


Today my work looks very different. But the most important shift wasn’t my title. It was my mindset about security. For a long time, many of us were taught that security came from a job.


But the truth is this: Your job is not your security. Your skill set is.


Titles are containers.Capabilities are currency. When the container changes, the currency still spends.

And right now the landscape of work is shifting faster than many people expected. Technology is accelerating.Industries are restructuring. Entire departments are being reimagined or eliminated.


Many people feel it already. Some have been laid off.Some are still employed but internally done. Miserable, exhausted, or afraid to move. For many of us, survival mode helped build stability. But survival mode cannot build your future.


Survival mode is reactive. Reinvention is proactive.


And reinvention does not mean starting over. It means repositioning what you already have. Your experience matters.Your insight matters.Your results matter. You are not starting from scratch. You are starting from experience. And experience is leverage.


The Code

Evidence Silences Doubt

When you step into reinvention, doubt gets loud. You’ll hear the voices.

Was I really that good?Did I just get lucky?Can I actually build something outside the system?

And if you’re not careful, you’ll start believing the wrong story about yourself.

That’s why I still go back and look at the sales spreadsheets from my corporate career.

Not out of ego. But as evidence. Evidence that I built something real.Evidence that I delivered measurable results. Evidence that I know how to create value.


Evidence silences doubt. When the world questions your worth, facts matter. Receipts matter.

And every leader stepping into reinvention should keep their evidence close. Your experience is not imaginary.Your results are not accidental.Your value is not temporary. You already have proof of what you’re capable of.


Don’t forget who you are.
